Starving

I have to figure something out. The mealplan only allows you to eat fruits and veggies as snacks for th next two weeks. Basically, a detox of packaged food. Do you know how hard that is? Sure, I look forward to having my orange in the afternoon, but I feel full for only about an hour and then I am starving! I also had baby carrots as my mid morning snack and I was starving just an hour after that. I will admit that I sent one of my kids for a diet coke yesterday because I was about to insane from hunger.

I know its going to take awhile for my body to adjust to not having something to eat all the time like it used to, but man does this suck. I am used to justy eating when I feel like it. Also, I need to start up my hobby again of hook rugging because I need something to do when watching tv or I am going to go crazy. It used to be sunflower seed time, but I told Donald to get it away from me last night.

Confession: I had a diet coke and I even slipped and had a bag of Skittles. I was starving!!!
Cheer: I did not have any sunflower seeds last night and I bought two waters at lunch. And I turned down the unhealthy snack for after school tutorials (but now I need to remember to bring one form home because I was starving!!!)

  1. You're doing it wrong. You're never supposed to go hungry on a diet, because if you do, your body will go into starvation mode and your metabolism will slow down, preventing you from losing any weight.

The problem is that people have an oversimplified understanding of thermodynamics. The First Law of Thermodynamics states that energy can be neither created nor destroyed. This is why people always say you have to eat less and exercise more in order to lose weight. But even though you can't create or destroy energy, you can alter the rate at which it is transformed, which is basically what your metabolism does in response to increased or decreased caloric intake. If you eat less, your body will become more efficient, using less energy, so you don't actually lose any weight. (The opposite is also true---you can eat a ton of food and gain no weight, as long as it's all healthy food. This is why you always see skinny vegetarians and health nuts stuffing themselves with hummus.)

The bottom line is that no matter what diet you're following, you have to get enough calories---and if you feel hungry, you're not getting enough. If you really want to eat nothing but fruits and vegetables, you might be able to do it, but you'll have to eat a lot---for instance, instead of having carrots as a snack, have carrots and lettuce and an orange and an apple and some berries.

The easier way, though, is to eat something starchy. Starchy foods contain a great deal of energy and are easily broken down into glucose to fuel your cells. The brain runs only on glucose, and since humans have very large brains, we have very high starch requirements.

Starchy foods have a "fattening" reputation in the United States, but this is really a baseless slur. It's just that Americans eat very unhealthy starches, like Wonder Bread and french fries.

In short---go find some whole wheat artisan bread or brown rice and eat it! :(
